Small Business Saturday - Shop Local in Colorado!

As much as we love celebrating Thanksgiving, we also love indulging in leftovers while avoiding the crowded malls and big box stores on Black Friday.

Instead, we save our shopping lists for Small Business Saturday, when we enjoy hitting the small retailers and indie boutiques that can be found across the Denver metro area.

Why should you SHOP SMALL this holiday season?

Small businesses are the backbone of the economy. All you have to do is look at the numbers to know how important the 28 million small business owners are.

Small businesses make up:
• 99.7% of U.S. employer firms
• 98% of all firms exporting goods
• 55% of all jobs and 66% of all new jobs since the 1970s
• 54% of all sales in the…

West Denver Renaissance Collaborative plans to launch a major housing initiative early next year to help West Side homeowners gain more stability by building accessory dwelling units, or carriage houses, on their property.

In 2010, a zoning change allowed ADUs in some Denver neighborhoods based on a number of factors, including community desires. The idea of squeezing low-rise, small-scale affordable housing into existing single-family neighborhoods is very popular in the world of affordable housing theorists, and what’s not to love? Homeowners get an additional source of income, renters get more options and neighborhood character doesn’t change as dramatically as when single-family houses are scraped for mid-rise apartments.

But since 2010,…

Denver’s government has expanded its composting program to cover the entire city, city officials announced Recently.

Every household that is eligible for municipal trash and recycling services — about 176,000 in all — are now eligible for compost pickup, too. This is a major expansion of the city’s composting program, which keeps organic materials such as food and grass out of the landfill.

However, you’ll still have to sign up and pay specifically for compost pick-up. Compost service is $29.25 for three months or $107 for a year — so, a pretty decent discount if you pay annually. You can sign up here.

Enrollment is limited, so it’s possible that you won’t be allowed to sign up if you wait too long. As usual for Denver, large multi-family…

Denver Christkindl Market, Nov. 17–Dec. 23, 2017

Skyline Park is transformed into a miniature German village during this favorite Denver event, where Bavarian musicians play classic carols and dance-worthy melodies, and vendors dish up specialties served at traditional German Christmas markets, including baked apples, gingerbread biscuits, charcoal-grilled sausages and, of course, spicy mulled wine (gluehwein). Pick up cuckoo clocks, beer steins and other imported gifts for your loved ones, and sip gluehwein (something that might result in you picking up even more clocks and steins than you originally planned) as you get lost in the twinkling…
